Has anyone tried ashwagandha?

I have not been diagnosed as hypothyroid, but I do have an extremely slow metabolism. I suspect it might be related to the childhood diseases I had-everything from mumps to scarlett fever, and/or my gluten intolerance.
My doctor is hesitant to prescribe synthroid as the numbers dont justify it. A friend that is into herbs suggested I try ashwagandha? What do you think? Also, she says the gluten has affected my thyroid? And, I should stop my three cups of tea a day habit as tea contains fluoride, which also slows metabolism? Thanks for your thoughts!

Yes, I’ve tried Ashwaganda.

It’s an interesting herb, and helps many different problems one being metabolism.

Sounds like a good idea for you to try, and it certainly would not hurt you.

Kelp and Bladderwrack might also be interesting for you to see if it helps.

It’s possible about the gluten, as many people with slow metabolisms &/or are hypothyroid have issues with gluten. BUT they usually have thyroid antibodies present as well, diagnosed/tested for with a blood test.

Tea contains fluoride? Not sure what tea you drink, but then just change teas.
BUT the water contains fluoride though, easy to correct as you can get yourself a filter such as Brita.
Yes, fluoride has an impact on the thyroid, and I would suggest getting toothpaste with out fluoride as well.

There are many ways to boost your metabolism, such as making sure you eat breakfast, don’t starve, eat the majority of your food earlier in the day, eat smaller meals more frequently, get enough aerobic exercise, build muscle with weight training or resistance exercise, drink lots of water (minimum of 8 glasses a day away from your food), get enough B vitamins (50 mg/day), Consider energy and bodywork , such as yoga, tai chi, and qigong.

Good luck to you

I would recommend body building and switching to a low-glycemic diet (choosing carbs that break down more slowly). Every pound of muscle you build burns an extra 50 calories per day. And aside from that, it boosts metabolism. Cardio not nearly as much, maybe in combination with weight lifting.

With regard to ashwagandha, yes I have taken it. I’m afraid I can’t report it boosting my metabolism. It is an herb with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant constituents that’s being investigated for treating a number of diseases.
